The year was 1989, I remember the first day of my apprenticeship like it was yesterday. As I stepped into the clinic, I was quickly overwhelmed with the amount of activity going on around me. The front office receptionist was busy answering phones and helping clients, in a large area to the left of the front desk, two rehab techs were working with clients on their exercise programs, while a third tech was explaining the benefits of proper posture and body movement to a small group. It was amazing to watch this all unfold in front of me!

In the time span of about 3.5 minutes, I was aware of at least 3 different languages being spoken all the while a 3 to 4 year old little boy, wearing faded, blue overalls stood in front of the huge fish tank in the front lobby, pressing his mouth and as much of his face into the front viewing glass, humming a song to his new fishy friends, and dangling his fingers over the top edge of the tank! Just a few moments ago, I was standing in a peaceful courtyard outside of this lobby, looking in, and completely unaware of world I was about to step into.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as a healthcare provider is to focus on the cause and not the symptoms! That is, not to say that it is unimportant to alleviate your client’s pain and inflammation; however, it is important to identify what is causing the symptoms, or as I like to say, “Getting to the heart of the matter.” A good rule of thumb with this perspective is that it can sometimes be a process of elimination to identify the root cause of the problem. It is important to not only look at the small individual details of the human genetic and physiological function, but you also need to step back and look at the human body as a network of systems that work together as one complete system. The more you understand the body’s needs the more effective you will be at helping the body recover, rebuild, and repair.

As humans, many of us have been conditioned to see aging as a negative phenomenon! And to complicate matters many of us find it difficult to intellectualize our own mortality. Aging is a beautiful and natural process, it is the opportunity given to every living organism to express itself within its present life span, and it is truly an amazing gift. Our goal should not be to live forever, but instead it should be to have the best quality life while we are here!

There are a number of effective ways to enhance an individual’s odds of attaining a better quality of life.
